Reflection

by Sister Dorothy Jean Beyer, OSB

In today’s Gospel, we read about the encounter of the Risen Christ with two of his disciples on the way to Emmaus. Those two disciples did not recognize Jesus. In my pride and naive thinking, if I had been one of the two disciples, I would have recognized Jesus right away. NOT! Even today, I don’t often recognize Jesus when He comes to me disguised in the poor, the unpopular, the annoying, the homeless. I need Jesus to “show me path of life” very clearly and plainly. I am one of those foolish and slow of heart disciples who needs Jesus! Jesus, the way, the truth and the life.

Let us say the Gospel Acclamation often throughout our day and our week: “Lord, Jesus, open the Scriptures to us. Make our hearts burn while you speak to us.”

Lord Jesus, open wide my heart to see you and hear you always in every moment of my life. Let me be not only a hearer of your voice, but a doer of love and compassion to all I encounter. Lord, I love to hear your Voice.

“But as we progress in this way of life and in faith, we shall run on the path of God’s commandments, our hearts overflowing with the inexpressible delight of love.” Rule of St. Benedict, Prologue 49
