Reflection

by Sister Joseph Fennimore, OSB

As Christians we are followers of Jesus Christ. We walk in his footsteps, which are the way to the Father, the way to heaven. In today’s Gospel Jesus is telling his disciples exactly that. “I am the way, the truth and the life.” If they believe this they know the way to the Father, which is Christ. If we believe this we also know the way to the Father, through Christ. The only way to go to the Father is through Jesus Christ, believing in his words, putting into practice what he taught, relating to others as he related to others, accepting suffering as he accepted suffering. In order to do this one has to have a personal relationship with Jesus. One has to seek Jesus, study and ponder his words, live in his presence, converse with him, and rest in him. A person doing this can then respond positively to Jesus’ words, “Where I am going you know the way.” That person knows the way is Jesus and that this way will lead to eternal life with the Father. “Your way of acting should be different from the world’s way; the love of Christ must come before all else” Rule of St. Benedict, Chapter 4: 20-21 Gospel Acclamation “I am the way, the truth and the life, says the Lord; no one comes to the Father, except through me.”
